Self-Esteem is foundational to realizing and fulfilling your inspired dream and God-designed purpose…His assignment for your life.
I’m passionate about women knowing their self-worth because in my younger years it was something I lacked ~ thinking my worth was equal to my approval, attention, and praise.
As a result, by the time I was a young adult my shelves were stacked with self-help books. I was looking for answers that would create success … which I suppose I believed led to significance.
Suddenly, during my self-help age, I found myself going through a divorce. God used this ‘pit’ experience to teach me that my judgment and attitude of self wasn’t going to substantially change by thinking positive thoughts, walking on hot coals, or chanting a mantra as prescribed in my books. Not that these are bad things, but…
The reality is, my change in esteem would come from a different source. Thinking good and right things, yes! This is important, yet more important is:
- taking my thoughts captive to Christ.
- submitting – losing – myself to Jesus and His character.
- praising and thanking God for His grace through Christ.
As only God can, He allowed me to get desperate enough to realize my self-esteem issues were only going to be resolved by my knowledge, faith, and confidence in Christ.
Not surprisingly, gaining this confidence would begin with a question…one God poses to you as well.
Who Do You Say That I Am?
Jesus likes us to discover answers to questions by posing another question. I believe the most important question He asks relative to our worth is not about us, it is about Him.
Who do you say that I am?
I wonder if Jesus asks His disciples this question because everything they would do, say, and believe from there on out would stem from their answer and define them.
It’s the same for you and me. Who do you say Jesus is? Answering this question, leads to the truth of who you are, what you do, say, and believe.
If you say Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, then you are giving all authority to Him, what He says, and what He does. Right?
And if you are giving all authority to Him, the Son of God, you must believe what He says is truth. Correct?
Then, based on this, you must believe…who God says you are. But, do you know who God says you are?
Who Does God You Say That You Are?
Through Christ, God says that you are:
• His Child
• His Creation
• Heir to His Throne
• Strong in His Power
• Not Guilty
Finally, the remaining question is this:
Who Do You Say That You Are?
Most of all, your self-esteem is validated by God’s unchangeable opinion of your worth expressed in Christ’s love for you. And this worth ~ your worth ~ remains the same:
- on every happy and difficult day,
- through every thrilling and crummy circumstance,
- among each glaring or hidden sin,
- and within every unnoticed and deeply breathed breath that comes from the living God.
The truth is, your self-esteem comes from losing yourself and gaining more of Christ.
