Do you desire to know God’s calling for your life?
We are meant to (created to) accomplish God’s calling—his unique assignment for each of us. Perhaps that’s why we often find we have a deep yearning for meaning, significance, and contribution. Because our calling is placed within us from the beginning and cries to be released and lived.
So, if your reason for being here is in you why don’t you know your calling? Here are two reasons to consider.
1. You may not really want to know what God has in mind for you.
2. You may be afraid of what God’s purpose will require of you.
1. You May Not Want to Know God’s Purpose For You
Life is pretty good. You’ve come this far with your family, career, and reputation in tact. Your involvement in church and community seems just about right.
And, you’re just busy enough to complain about your to-do list, responsibilities, and the things everyone else asks you to do and at the same time you feel a sense of satisfaction because you are acknowledged and needed.
Please don’t take offense!
I speak from personal experience. I’ve been there—done that, and I know we sometimes mistake hectic schedules for purposeful, meaningful, and significant living.
But actually, the opposite is true. We can find much more meaning when we desire to home in, focus on, and come to know God’s unique and specific calling for our lives. In fact, once you know your ‘why’, you’ll find living into it might just be the best time management tool ever created!
When you know God’s calling you’ll find it’s easier to:
• Focus on what’s important in God’s eyes because it’s relative to your calling
• Say no when yes would mean meandering down roads not meant for you
• Find time to rest and enjoy what’s most meaningful to you
• Influence and impact others in ways God is calling you to contribute

2. You May Be Afraid Of What God’s Calling Requires Of You
One of the most common obstacles to knowing God’s calling is what I refer to as the fear factor.
Remember the show years ago by the same name, Fear Factor? The idea was that the contestants on the show would dare to eat living crawling and very leggy, slimy creatures; jump, climb, or soar over through and under unimaginable obstacles; lie in, run through, or become entangled in squirming or otherwise daunting things. Whoever could get through a menu of these obstacles was the winner.
Contestants were challenged to overcome their fear of leaving the known and stepping into and through the unknown to victory.
Normally, God’s calling doesn’t include such gross and slimy contests but when we look into scripture we do see that choosing to risk accepting God’s calling is hard work and always requires leaving things behind. Change.
Your Calling Requires Change
• The disciples dropped their nets and left their work to follow Jesus
• Abraham left the land he knew to build a new nation
• Mary left behind her good reputation to willingly bear God’s son
• Jesus left his throne to save your life
I’m sure each of these people felt fear—even the human part of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. But none of them let fear stop them from fulfilling the purpose God had designed for them. He was faithful to bring them through whatever obstacles they faced and provided meaningful opportunities for service along the way to fulfilling it.
So, if you’re trapped by the fear of change, the unknown, letting go or giving away of your time, possessions or whatever—know this. Your job is to listen, willingly choose to follow Jesus, and risk letting go of what he asks you to leave behind so he can work through you and you can know and live your most challenging, joy-filled, and meaningful life … your calling.
